QR Quotes
QR (quick response) codes are two dimensional codes made up of black and white squares arranged within a grid on a larger square. They are most frequently used to encode text and website URLs, and can be read by scanner applications available for the majority of smart phones.
The QR codes below are all hand-beaded and encoded with links to specific webpages I have built for each beaded code. On each webpage there is a quote with links to further information on the sources of each quote. At the bottom of each quote page is a counter displaying how many other people have visited the page.
In an exhibition setting, viewers can use their smart phones to scan individual QR codes and view the webpages and quotes connected to each beaded code. The documentary photographs of each piece below can either be clicked on to take website visitors to individual quote pages, or they can be scanned by visitors with smart phones who would like to approximate the experience of interacting with one of the drawings in person.
It is my intention for this to be an ongoing and expanding project that explores the relationship between art object and idea / viewer / language / communication / etc... I am currently working on setting up a process for viewers to submit quotes to be considered for inclusion in the project. The only requirement for the quotes I choose is that I find them interesting enough to want to open up a dialog around them. There are no restrictions on length or source.
