An Exchange with Sol LeWitt
Press Release
The story of Sol LeWitt's exchanges with other artists is widely known. Though most artists engage in this process at one point or another, LeWitt seemed fully committed to it as an artistic code of conduct, a way of life. Eva Hesse, Robert Mangold, Hanna Darboven, and Robert Ryman are just a few of LeWitt's celebrated contemporaries with whom the artist exchanged works. Such exchanges were not limited to well-known artists -- LeWitt consistently traded works with admirers whom he did not know but who had nevertheless sent their work to him, as well as amateur artists with whom he interacted in his daily life. LeWitt's exchanges —- he responded to every work he received by sending back one of his own -— fostered an ongoing form of artistic communion and, in some cases, a source of support and patronage. The Sol LeWitt Private Collection retains all of the works he received, as well as a record of what he offered in return.
For LeWitt, the act of exchange seemed to be not only a personal gesture, but also an integral part of his conceptual practice. In addition to encouraging the circulation of artworks through a gift economy that challenged the art world's dominant economic model, LeWitt's exchanges with strangers have the same qualities of generosity, and risk, that characterized his work in general. This kind of exchange was designed to stage an encounter between two minds, outside the familiar confines of friendship.
If we consider the process of exchange as another of Sol LeWitt's instructional pieces, then the rational (or irrational) thing to do is to continue to exchange work and ideas, if only symbolically, with him.
This exhibition, a curatorial project by Regine Basha, springs from a call to those who share an affinity with Sol LeWitt's legacy as a conceptual artist, to those who knew him and those who did not—to anyone who has ever wondered, "What would Sol LeWitt like?"
Cabinet and MASS MoCA issued an open call for gifts to Sol LeWitt in any form of an image, an object, a piece of music, or a film, books, ephemera, and other non-perishable items (e.g. wine) for a two-part exhibition taking place at MASS MoCA and at the offices of Cabinet (300 Nevins Street in Brooklyn) from January 20- February 19, 2011. A publication documenting the contributions will accompany the shows and will be presented at the conclusion of the project to all participants.
You can check out a review of the show here.

PRESS RELEASE:
Disruptive Stillness
A juried multidisciplinary exhibition at the Jean Paul Slusser Gallery
Why is stillness a disruption? While many artists align themselves
with the culture of the frenetic that permeates the networked society,
a growing number of artists challenge their audience to avoid the trap
of speed: they believe in the power of contemplation and have
witnessed firsthand the radical nature of stillness, a state of being
which disrupts contemporary life.
As our surroundings become increasingly frantic, the choice to remain
still – or to encourage others to do so – becomes a powerful
supposition beyond the norm, causing reactions ranging between
acceptance, confusion, and discomfort.
This juried exhibition explores a variety of contemporary artists’
methods for incorporating the notion of stillness into the objects and
experiences they create. Works in a variety of media will be on
display including painting, photography, video, fibers, installation,
video and sound.
Contributors to the exhibition include Sudandyo Aprilianto, Alicia
Chester and Michael DeBonis, Seth Cluett, Reed Esslinger, Andy Graydon,
Kirsty Hall, Mike Hallenbeck, Pato Hebert, Lindsey Hook, Emilia
Javanica, Dragana Jurisic, Andrew Kaufman, Andy Klunder, Joseph

Javanica, John Kannenberg and Collin McRae.

I have been selected to be a part of Around the Coyote's 1st Annual Painting Competition and Exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Artist and Curator Sara Schnadt. Selected artists include Matt Hallinan, Mark Hansen, Lindsey Hook, Diane Huff, Elizabeth Kauffman, Blair Michele Meehan, John Mosher, Gosia Podosek, Emily Rapport, and Erin Rivers.
The artists selected for this exhibition were chosen on the criteria of cohesive visual and conceptual themes in their work, as well as a strong aesthetic value. The accepted group of artists produce work in varying styles, subject matter and scale, but are all representative of clever, potent new and emerging paintings of all forms. The goal of this competition and exhibition is to showcase the most talented artists working in painting in the emerging contemporary art category.
The opening reception will be from 6-9pm at Around the Coyote's Exhibition space in the Splat Flats building at 1817 W Division Avenue in Chicago.
An After-Party will be held at 9pm, at Debonair Social Club in Wicker Park. From 9pm-11pm, National Headquarters will present "SKINEMAX Live!", a unique Video Installation and Performance. Debonair Social Club is at 1575 N Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park. More info at www.debonairsocialclub.com. The After-Party is organized by GROLSCH in collaboration with Anna Cerniglia and NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, and both events are generously sponsored by Grolsch.
